Exploring deeply and intentionally a genderqueer identity in public, Townsend's writing foregrounds joy, revolt, complicity, shame, the allure of flesh and what covers it, taking apart cultural assumptions of sex with the tools of the master. At its bleeding heart Sex Machines is a buoyant account of everyday decadence and a big fuck you to capitalism’s grip on physical presentation. In their own words:
